Quick answer
How do I test my typing speed?
Start typing the words shown in this typing speed test and the timer begins with your first key. At the end you see your net words per minute (WPM), where one word is 5 characters minus errors, and your accuracy. An average typist scores about 40 WPM; 60+ WPM is fast.
- Average: about 40 WPM
- Good: 50–70 WPM with 95%+ accuracy
- WPM = (characters ÷ 5 − errors) ÷ minutes
What do typing speed test results mean?
- Under 30 WPM: beginner; focus on accuracy and touch typing
- 30–45 WPM: average for most people
- 45–70 WPM: fast; meets most job and exam requirements
- 70+ WPM: professional level
How does the typing speed test measure WPM?
The test compares what you type with the text, character by character. One “word” counts as 5 characters, including spaces, so long and short words are treated the same. Your main score is net WPM, which takes off one word for every mistake you leave uncorrected.
Say you type 250 characters in 60 seconds. With no errors, that’s 250 ÷ 5 = 50 WPM. Leave 3 errors in and your net speed drops to 47 WPM. Accuracy is the share of characters you got right, and the result card also shows your gross speed before errors are taken off.
How do you take the typing test?
- Choose 15, 30 or 60 seconds. The 60-second test gives the steadiest score.
- Click in the box and start typing the words shown. The timer starts with your first key.
- Watch the live highlights: correct letters turn green and mistakes turn red.
- Backspace to fix mistakes. Corrected errors don’t count against you.
WPM is scaled to a full minute, so a short test at the same pace gives the same result. Pasting is blocked, and you get fresh random words every time you restart.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 words per minute (WPM) is average. 50–70 WPM is above average and good for most office jobs, and professional typists often exceed 70–80 WPM with high accuracy.
How is WPM calculated?
A “word” is counted as 5 characters, including spaces. Gross WPM is characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes; net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors, which is the score shown here.
What typing speed do government typing tests need?
Requirements vary by exam. For example, SSC skill tests have commonly asked for about 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi on a computer. Check your exam notification for the exact speed and rules.
How can I improve my typing speed?
Use all ten fingers from the home row, look at the screen rather than the keyboard, and focus on accuracy before speed. Ten minutes of daily practice makes a noticeable difference in a few weeks.
Why does my typing score drop so much after one skipped letter?
The test compares your text with the original letter by letter, so skipping one letter shifts everything after it out of line and marks it wrong. Backspace to the mistake and carry on; corrected errors aren’t counted.
Can I take a 15-second or 30-second typing test?
Yes. Choose 15 s, 30 s or 60 s above the text. WPM is scaled to a minute, so the same pace gives the same score: 125 correct characters in 30 seconds is 50 WPM.
